Feedback
A key element of Best Bar None will be the feedback stage. During the assessment process the Assessors will identify good practise that is used one or more premises. Some of these will very simple to implement but others may be more expensive.
Good practice will be disseminated in two directions, namely to other licensed premises in a feedback document.
Where a premises does not meet accredation standard the venue will be given feedback/advice to bring it up to required national accredation standard. Any venue that fails accrediation on the first assessment will not be put forward as one of the top 5 in each category.
Feedback is of fundamental importance to the ethos of Best Best None as a development and educational process.
Best Bar None Feedback 2007
This document identifies examples of best practice that were found during the Best Bar None (BBN) process in 2007. You will see that some of them are very simple but others are more extensive or costly. This is purely for guidance, recognising that you may already have them in place.
Some of the premises who have applied this year see their application for BBN as an opportunity to see the processes already in use and to point to areas for further development.
Clearly I do not want to identify individual premises so please take time to read this and see if you and your premises can benefit. You may be aware the Best Bar None assessment allows a proportional approach depending on the size of the premises, whether they are part of a large chain, small business or independent. So please bear that in mind when reading the following:
• Cradle/Basket for collecting glasses. This enhances safety and prevents injury to glass collecting staff.
• Drink drive campaign - where a customer appears drunk possibly you could buy the keys for £10 for the taxi and give the money back when the customer collects his/her car later.
• Use polycarbonate glasses especially with Smokefree having been implemented on 1st July 2007
• Become a member of British Institute of Innkeepers
• Join a Portsmouth City Pub Watch Group
• Where possible use ticket sales to control capacity
• Have effective search policy for both staff and customers
• In large premises it would be beneficial if Managers Staff underwent Conflict Management and physical intervention courses
• Large premises should carry out evacuation exercises
• Signage displaying that customers should leave the premises quietly
• Use of ID scan system to identify underage or banned customers
• Where a spillage occurs the member of staff who discovers it does NOT leave it. Brings assistance to the location.
• Document security meetings with SIA staff - smaller premises should maintain a record of staff meetings especially when dealing security, drugs, thefts etc.
• Prominently advertise a wide range of soft drinks
• Smaller/independent premises should document the individual staff responsibilities regards selling intoxicants to under age customer
• Where possible- in larger premises - use a powder or gel form spill pack.
• Have signs showing taxi numbers visible in exit area
• Do NOT hold drinks promotions over short periods of time.
• To prevent drugs usage in toilets make sure the cisterns are hidden, or with a sloping shelf, or covered in Vaseline/ WD40
• Use Challenge 21 and Knockback pack to train staff for under age sales, PCC Due Dillengence training.
• Some premises promote security of customer's property e.g. Bag watch on tee shirts
I hope the above list is useful and I look forward to you applying for the Best Bar None this year.
